The present Lough Gur N.S. was opened in 1966 and is a 2 teacher school serving the wider community. In 2009 there were approximately 40 students attending. The current principal is Mrs Carmel Gleeson and the junior teacher is Mrs Eileen Wixted.
The old school which had functioned since 1854 was converted into clubhouse and community centre and many organisations have been centred there over the past 40 years. Eventually it was refurbished to form the Honey Fitz theatre.
The school has a very active sporting tradition with weekly football, hurling and rugby coaches attending the school and mentoring the students. This has proved so successful that the girls from Lough Gur N.S. have won the primary schools football championship in Co. Limerick in 2008 and 2009!
There is also a wonderful emphasis on drama and music in the school with a wonderful Christmas pageant being produced by all of the students each year which serves as a showcase for music, singing and drama. Indeed it is this emphasis on the arts which ensures that Lough Gur N.S. is one of the main feeders to the Co. Limerick Youth Theatre which is based at the Honey Fitz theatre.
The school has very close links to the community and has an extremely active Parents Association who work very closely in association with the staff.
