Job Description

Position: Operations Supervisor (39 hours per week).

Reporting to:    Manager and Board of Lough Gur Development (LGD).

Application requirements: Applicants must be in receipt of a social welfare benefit to apply for the position as this role is funded by Pobal under the rural development program.  Continuation of employment is subject to continuation of funding from Pobal.


Lough Gur is located 21kms from Limerick City in the heart of an idyllic lakeshore location. The employer is Lough Gur Development, a voluntary not-for-profit community organisation operating as a social enterprise and currently in the process of applying for charitable status. LGD holds a lease to operate Lough Gur Visitor Centre, Kiosk and Playground and also holds a licence to operate the nearby Honey Fitz Theatre. LGD is committed to promoting, protecting and preserving the culture, environment, history and archaeology of Lough Gur through social enterprise initiatives. This is achieved by generating income from retail areas, education programs, events and fundraising. A suitable applicant for this position will have retail experience, staff supervision and community and volunteer development experience along with a strong financial acumen. The successful candidate will be required to work a minimum of 3 days per week in Lough Gur Visitor Centre or Kiosk from 10am to 6pm allowing 2 administration days per week to complete associated tasks.

Core Purpose of Role:

The purpose of the role is to assist with generating income to support initiatives for social good, including service delivery, staff supervision along with event management. This will be achieved by supporting Lough Gur Development in its capacity as a social enterprise to fulfil the aims and objectives of the community focused organisation with limited budgets. As a community focused not for profit organisation operating as a social enterprise in the tourism, education and cultural sector this role is ideally suited for a person who enjoys working with people and delivering excellent customer service to community members and all visitors to facilities operated by LGD. The aims and objectives of the organisation are in summary. to undertake activities for purposes beneficial to the community of Lough Gur and surrounding districts. Overall, the core purpose of this role will be achieved by engaging with the local community, supervising facilities, delivering & developing events, facilitating workshops and education programs and supervising staff.

Areas of Responsibility:

Honey Fitz Theatre

  • In collaboration with Lough Gur Development, volunteers and support staff develop and maximise the Honey Fitz Theatre as a recognised venue for entertainment, through developing a calendar of events and through association and partnership with similar venues.
  • Facilities supervision of the Honey Fitz Theatre through identification and implementation of improvements to enhance the attractiveness of the facility to users, performers, and audiences.
  • Grow opportunities with assistance from support staff to use the facility for training and or recreational activities.
  • Improve online booking engine for the Honey Fitz Theatre to encourage increased revenue.
  • Oversee and supervise events at the Honey Fitz Theatre.

Lough Gur Visitor Centre, Kiosk & Playground

Operational supervision of the Visitor Centre, Kiosk Playground through the following actions:

  • Raise revenue through effective operations and supervision of retail areas & exhibition.
  • Supervise & train staff and volunteers.
  • Rostering and scheduling for facilities.
  • Supervise retail areas through accurate inventory control.
  • When required work in the Visitor Centre and Kiosk retail & exhibition areas.
  • Ensure excellent customer service is provided.

 Events & Education

  • Work on own initiative to develop and deliver innovative events, workshops and activities to increase income and for the benefit of all visitors and the community.
  • Seek out and apply for funding opportunities to support events and activities.
  • Work with support staff to create links with local primary and post primary schools.
  • Facilitate workshops as part of LGD’s status as a Leave No Trace Ireland Training Centre.
  • Facilitate workshops as part of LGD’s status as a Science Foundation Ireland Training Centre.
  • Proactively develop and create new workshops for schools associated with the curriculum.
  • Increase educational tour bookings at the Visitor Centre and at associated monuments.

Staff Supervision:

Supervision of all staff & volunteers supported by the Manager of Lough Gur through the following:

  • Implementing a digital HR system to accurately record hours worked.
  • Effectively roster staff for the Visitor Centre and Kiosk.
  • Train staff to required level to carry out their duties for LGD.
  • Ensure high level of customer service is provided.
  • Seek new ways to motivate and encourage staff to perform to the best of their ability.
  • Develop annual training days and familiarisation visits for staff members.

 Community Engagement:

  • Devise innovative ways to engage with the local community for improved LGD outcomes.
  • Liaise with community members to develop a schedule of events of interest.
  • Communicate openly with community members in relation to new initiatives.


  • Ensure that all relevant administration is effectively carried out.
  • Proactively highlight and report issues, opportunities ideas and insights, with associated metrics, to the Manager for reporting at each monthly Board meeting.
  • Ensure relevant legal requirements pertinent to the safe, secure and correct operation of the Visitor Centre, Kiosk, Playground and Honey Fitz Theatre, and all Development activities and events are adhered to, e.g. Health & Safety, HR, Licencing & Data Protection
  • Other ad hoc duties as required by the Lough Gur Development.

Essential Requirements:


Applicants must be of good character and have strong decision making and problem-solving abilities as evidenced by experience.


Applicants must be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.


  • 2+ years in a similar role.
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Working effectively as part of a team.


  • Third level qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience on social media and updating websites.
  • Tour guiding experience.
  • Community engagement expertise.
  • Innovative and creative as evidenced by experience.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work on own initiative.
  • Change management experience.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Hold a clean driving licence.


€546 per week.

Hours of Work:

39 hours per week.

Annual Leave:

21 days per annum plus bank holidays.


Travelling expenses necessarily incurred in the course of duties will be refunded in accordance with appropriate rates. Lough Gur Development, as employer, must be indemnified on your insurance policy.  If during your employment, your licence is revoked, even temporarily, or if you receive endorsements on your licence, which may affect your duties, you are obliged to notify Lough Gur Development immediately.

Garda Vetting:

Accordingly, candidates may be requested to complete and sign a consent form to permit the required vetting to be completed, in respect of candidates to whom the position will be offered, prior to taking up duty.


Lough Gur Development reserves the right to assign the successful candidate to any facility leased by Lough Gur Development, now or in the future.  In general, the place of work will be at the Honey Fitz Theatre, Lough Gur Visitor Centre or Lough Gur Kiosk. A degree of flexibility to work from home may at the discretion of the employer for one to two days to complete administration duties.


The following provisions apply:

(a) The successful candidate will be placed on a 6 month probationary period.

(b) If Lough Gur Development deem that a further 3 month probationary period is required to assess the suitability of the candidate for the role the probationary period will be extended.

Pre-Employment Medical:

Prior to appointment the candidate may be required to complete a Health Declaration and may be required to undergo a medical examination by a qualified medical practitioner nominated by Lough Gur Development. Where for any reason the cost of the medical examination is borne by the applicant, it shall be refunded on appointment subject to statutory tax and statutory deductions.

Selection Process:

Candidates will initially be assessed to ensure that they have the minimum requirements for the position.

Candidates will then be assessed on the basis of the information contained in their application form to determine, having regard to the requirements of the position and the number who have applied, if they should be called for interview.  Short-listing may apply.

Competitive Interview:

Selection will be by means of a competition based on an interview conducted by or on behalf of Lough Gur Development.  This interview may be in person or online, this is at the discretion of the organisation.
