People come to Lough Gur for its beauty and tranquillity but many more want to find out more about this magical place. Located 21kms outside of Limerick city you will find Lough Gur Visitor Centre & Lakeshore Park. Lough Gur is internationally significant for the areas rich archaeological significance and environmental importance as a proposed designated heritage area. Most recently Lough Gur was awarded the first Heritage Site flag for Limerick and is a recipient of multiple awards including numerous Green Flag awards for parks of excellence.
Visitors are welcome to walk along the lakeshore park, visit our Woodland Coffee Kiosk or enter the lakeview Visitor Centre for an interactive tour of the exhibition by a professional guide.
You are welcome to visit the exhibition without booking directly or email info@loughgur.com. The online booking engine is currently undergoing upgrades. To book a full outdoor tour of the ancient monuments found across the landscape including Ireland’s oldest and largest stone circle please email info@loughgur.com or phone 061 385186 to book directly. For children, you will find a lakeview playground and activity workshops and camps often run throughout the year.
The exhibition tour takes approximately 30 minutes while a full tour ranges from 1-3 hours depending on the time that you have available. Full outdoor tours require 48 hours notice in advance. The Visitor Centre is open all year round from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday from November to January and for extended hours from February to September. OPW Heritage Cards are accepted at Lough Gur Visitor Centre. If you already have a Heritage Card there is no need to book your exhibition tour online. Full outdoor tours are not covered. The lakefront tour typically takes 30 minutes and allow a further 30 minutes for the exhibition. A trail map is also provided. Enjoy Lough Gur lakefront taking in information on Bourchiers Castle, Bolin island (Cranóg), Hangman's rock and entrance to the Visitor Centre.
