Lough Gur Visitors’ Centre and Kiosk offers guided tours and refreshments from Limerick’s only leafy lakeshore public park stretching over 20 acres. The Lough Gur wider area is recognised as internationally significant in terms of archaeology and history. It is the only site in Ireland where evidence of every age of humankind is visible. There are 136 monuments in State care surrounding Lough Gur. These are protected by the National Monuments Service and maintained by the Office of Public Works.
Although many of the archaeological sites are inaccessible to visitors, when you go to Lough Gur Visitor Centre the guides will offer you the option for an interactive tour of the exhibition. There is also an option to pre-book a full outdoor tour to a selection of monuments including the Great Grange Stone Circle, Ireland’s oldest and largest stone circle that is situated 2kms from the lakefront.
The lake of Lough Gur is the only natural lake of significance in Limerick stretching for over 76 Hectares. The lake areas and wetlands surrounding the amenity area are designated a proposed National Heritage Area (pNHA) and is a listed Wildfowl Sanctuary. With Lough Gur’s protected status, we work to protect this sensitive environment in a way that allows all visitors to enjoy the spectacular beauty of this area.
Lough Gur Visitor Centre and Kiosk are owned by Limerick City & County Council and leased by Discover Limerick DAC, who also oversee operations at King John’s Castle & Adare Heritage Centre. Discover Limerick DAC is a subsidiary company of Limerick City and County Council.
The grounds at the base of Lough Gur Visitor Centre span over 20 acres and have been awarded several Green Flag Awards and Limerick’s first Green Heritage Site Award by An Taisce. The park areas are owned and maintained by Limerick City and County Council along with the lake of Lough Gur that spreads over 76 hectares.
Prior to March 1st 2023 Lough Gur Visitor Centre, Kiosk and Playground were overseen by Lough Gur Development community group, supported by Limerick City and County Council. Through strong working partnerships services continued to be offered by Discover Limerick DAC for the benefit of all visitors while Limerick City and County Council continue to care for the rich environment that Lough Gur has become famous for.
Today, when you visit Lough Gur you will enjoy one of Ireland’s most scenic locations with expert staff on site to guide your way. If you choose not to take a guided tour, you are free to roam the park areas and enjoy refreshments from our facilities.
